In the fall of 1941, in order to protect the bridge on the frontier between China and Burma, the United States Special Army Force fight off the Japanese Air Force as they attempt to destroy it. James, an American aviator who has been injured during the struggle, stumbles in to a small village of the Lisu peoples where eight-year old Niu Honghong cares for him. Although initially suspicious of each other, they gradually build mutual trust and understanding, and finally become close friends. When James has fully recovered and is about to depart, he receives an order from his superiors to bomb the same bridge that they have been risking their lives to protect. With the Japanese closing in, and unable to convince the villagers of this new urgency, the friendship of James and Niu Honghong will undergo a serious test …
